Fascia is the matrix within which the cells specialize. We self organize, we self generate, we self emerge. We are one. We are self evident. J.ohn Sharkey
The concept of biotensegrity describes an interconnectedness on all levels of existence. From the tiniest microscopic expression deep inside our bodies to the surface of our skins, biotensegrity holds that any form of living matter can only exist when it is in connection to a larger whole. Biotensegrity is expressed as having a scaler quality. This interconnection is the ground substance if you will, for a quality of coherence and resiliency.
On a human, physical level we note:
Dr. Levin uses the example of baking a cake. Each ingredient has its own properties; for instance eggs are kind of sticky, sugar is granular, sweet, flour is fine like a powder and so on. But when we mix all of these together and bake it in the oven something emerges that has completely new properties. When we take a bite, we cannot find the flour or the eggs, but we find what we call an emergent property. An emergent property is something that is entirely different than what any of the individual components might have suggested to us.
One of the functional properties of the brain is to look for balance under any and all physical challenges: Injury, illness, emotional pain and so on. We might say that in this manner the body is a micro expression of Indra's Net.
Indra's Net as taken from Hindu Yoga Philosophy is a web that holds the entirety of life in its balanced net, from the entire universe, down to the tiniest lifeform.
At all the hubs in this net, where strands meet and intersect, sits a multifaceted jewel reflecting the light of life.
Every faceted, multisided, multidimensional jewel in this web reflects the light that touches back it to where it bounced from and then out from its many facets to all the many other jewels around it and so on and on into infinity. In this way Indra's net is held in balance and remains coherent and functional.
All jewels require a clarity and brilliance that allows them to reflect with their many facets appropriately. If any part of any jewel is occluded, the balance through the entire net is eventually affected and changed, however minutely.
We might say that our bodies are a tiny, yet similar version of Indra's Net. We need to promote our individual balance within our physical 3Dmatrix, as well as in our mental, emotional and spiritual bodies in order to stay healthy and functional, and so express the highest form of our humanity. As humans we are but a speck on Indra's net, yet we are responsible to help Indra keep the balance. In expressing our individual potential correctly, and contributing to our small scale network, Indra's net is supported.
From there it is easy to extend the principle of biotensegrity into our psycho social network. We all know that we contribute to social welfare through right action and interaction. Our social welfare depends on all of us doing our parts. If any one strand of our social network is damaged, the ripple effect of this can be far reaching, and continue forward through the generations.
I also wanted to tell you how wonderful the yoga was today. I realized part way through that I haven’t moved my body, been in my body this much (except at the last class, which focused on tensegrity) for almost a year, what with the knee surgery then being away all summer and you being away and me being away again.... It was incredibly wonderful to move and stretch like that. Last night I dreamed that I need “more allies” to help my body fully heal from this rough year, and I realized during the yoga class that you’re one of them.
Thank you! Love and blessings, Kate
We might consider that awareness of, and having a true connection to the abundance in our lives and the acknowledgement that we have people in our lives who love us, want to be with us, will help us even when the need arises, is a big part of our practice. To know and honour all those moments where we feel deeply, where we have those gorgeous sparks of insight and loving connection, where we learn and have learnt in the past from amazing teachers, to be conscious of our material good fortune, our mental strength and spiritual growth is very important.
We are given such beauty to contemplate, such love to feel, so much we can give to and share with others.
Our acknowledgement of all this abundance roots us into a wondrous feeling of humility, joy and gratitude. It just does. It sets up all sorts of kindness moments, to ourselves and others...Love and kindness and joy live where we practice this, right?
Much happens in the spaces and places inside and through us that we are often not aware of at the time of their occurrence, and so we call the time after these moments "processing".
In our practice we endeavour to bring the occurrence in the moment, and the processing and awareness of these moments together into a seamless, timeless union. Afterwards, in our uniquely individual way, we can let these learnings find expression. In this way we are students and teachers and human beings all at the same time.
The 10 day MRI workshop I attended in Ontario last June (2017) with Frey Faust was truly inspirational and I am still working to find all I have learned reflected in my own yoga and movement practice. My teaching has changed as a result. So much more to play with..
By the way..another MRI is coming up June 2018 in Toronto.
For me one of the things that has been in my body and my inquiry since the MRI is how do the spirals and curves happen? ..Shifting of weight happens and supports the change and flow through all our movements..This I think brings about the release of kinetic energy..We need the support of the kinetic force in order to make any type of movement..I have been wondering about the eternal, timeless and seemingly random interplay between the nervous system and the fascial matrix. We have mechano stimulation which occurs throughout the nervous system..body wide, but we also have mechanotransduction which starts in specific places, locally in the body and creates oscillating shifts through the entire tensional matrix instantly. A change in the balance between the tension and compression forces in the body locally sets up a ripple of change from that local point in the fascial matrix to create the kinetics needed to support any movement. Oscilliations through the tensional network are forcing changes and shifts which in and of themselves create sparks through the nervous system and then back through the tensional web we go. A never ending dance..It might be that it is in this way that kinetic mobilization can happen?

Weight is the effect of the mass of the earth and the mass of your body both attracting and pushing each other away. The human body, like other organic bodies, works with and against the principle of tensegrity (tensional integrity - B. Fuller) to both resist and take advantage of gravity. Partial resistance and surrender is how we use the pull/push of the earth to push and pull in turn, in order to get around, and to power many of our most basic biological processes. As we turn or propel ourselves forward, we direct forces in perpendicular vectors to GForce, reducing our "apparent weight". Moving faster to begin with, we are able to jump higher and farther because of this effect. Staying still in a position where available supports are far from the center of gravity can feel more strenuous because of this effect.
